Hi!

I just wondering if anyone can give me some hints, I'm thinking of buying me a new camera. At the moment I'm shooting with a Fuji S5 pro. The camera I'm looking at the most are the Canon 5d mkII, which probably suit my economy the best but I also thinking of a portable (analogue) medium format camera. My purpose is to find a camera with the high picture quality of a medium format for studio and at the same use it in an photojournalistic way.

Thanks/Johan

Hi Johan!

Coming from the S5 Pro, I think the 5D Mark II would be a good step up for you. From a sensor standpoint, the 5D's full frame will be a nice upgrade from Fuji's 1.5x crop. The images produced by the 5D will contain more detail and sharpness than what your used to seeing. Although I prefer Canon brand cameras, keep in mind that you will have to buy new lenses for a 5D since the Fuji's have Nikon mounts. I don't know if thats a concern of yours or not but I'm just throwing it out there.

As for wanting to have the sharpness and detail of a medium format camera, there simply is no substitute for the real thing. Medium format cameras use huge sensors/film-stocks that no consumer level camera's can compare to. But to get as close as possible without spending the super-high prices, you might want to look into the Canon 1Ds series or Nikon's D2x or D3x. They are great bodies for both studio use and in the field. Although they are quite pricey too and may be out of your price range.

Hope that helps some! :D

The 5d Mark II is great, but man there are some serious rigs out there. Hassleblads, Mamiya... nothing really compares... but they cost serious dough. You can grab a 1DS Mark II for $8,000 grand and do some serious damage. But the lenses also comprise a large amount of that quality, Quality = Dough. If you do grab a Canon, spend the money in the glass. Crappy Glass = Crappy IQ & Color... But the Lens doesn't compose the shot nor does it art direct, or sets up lights ;)

Good Luck with your Choice ;) But spend your money in Good Glass, and you won't hate yourself later...

Very wise answer, Black. I couldn't agree more. The uninformed solely chase megapixels, but the secret is in the glass.
